The resignation of John Boehner last week came as a shock to most people, including me. I was reminded of the first (and only) time I met the Speaker:
I attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, which is located within Mr. Boehner’s congressional district. I was a student there when he was first elected to Congress in the early 90’s. During his inaugural campaign he made a stop to the College Republicans group on campus and I went to his talk and spoke to him briefly afterwards. My impression? I took him to be an intellectual lightweight with no real principles but who was extremely ambitious in his desire to obtain power. In fact, after that talk I started to shy away from politics as I didn’t want to be associated with such people.
Amazing how accurate first impressions can sometimes be.
