More convenient for everyone
The apostle John was on the Mount called Olivet when the Lord appeared to him. Jesus said, “John, where are the other disciples? I have something important to tell you all and then I’m going to ascend to my Father.”
John replied, “Lord, today was not a good day for them. Peter and Andrew and James had to go fishing (they let me off since I’m just a teenager), and the other disciples also have to work today. Couldn’t you have picked a better day for us to meet? Like Sunday? I mean, after all, Thursday is a work day for just about everyone.”
Jesus frowned, and answered, “It has been forty days since my resurrection. Today is the day I am to ascend to my Father. Furthermore, in ten days I will be sending the Holy Spirit to you, and you need to spend those ten days in prayer.”
John said to him, “How about this – let’s reschedule your ascension for Sunday, when we can all get together. That way no one will miss this great event. Then we can just do the Holy Spirit thing the following Sunday; again, when we can all get off work and gather together. I really think that would work out for the best and would be a lot more convenient for everyone.”
Slowly, Jesus walked away, muttering, “I think I’m starting to regret giving these guys authority over the Church…”

Amen.
again, Amen. Am very disturbed by this turn of events.
This has been going on in California for the past 10 years. Holy days of obligation all been pushed to Sundays, the only one’s not included Christmas and the feast of the Assumption in August which hardly anyone remembers!
I never could understand but its at the discretion of the archbishop and the priests just follow along. Most priests rarely scheduled enough Mass’s on the weekday Masses, the regular 7:30 and 9am(when most are at work) then add a 5pm(which nobody could attend either since that is when they got off work and had at least an hour commute home barring traffic accidents).
This coupled with the 45 minutes for confessions on Saturdays only; unless you want to schedule an appointment. And people wonder why we can’t call our fellow Catholics home, nothing is sacred nor sane in our diocese at least.
Our hope is the Holy Spirit and Pope Benedict to straight the liberal archbishops out!
Canada’s been moving Holy Days of Obligation for years. No, Wait!
They’ve been eliminating them!
We have only two. Christmas and The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (which being on Jan 1 is very poorly attended, in my experience)
So non-obligatory feasts like the Assumption are ALL on Sunday.
I’ve never heard a good explanation as to why our Bishops have done this.
It is the same in Sweden as well… mostly, Ascension day is however not moved…
