Today the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception [1] here in Washington celebrates the 50th anniversary of its dedication [2]. I have been to the Shrine numerous times, and I always am touched by its beauty and the sense of the sacred present there. The Shrine is the largest Catholic Church in America and it has been visited by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

If you are looking for a great place to take a pilgrimage, consider going to the National Shrine. It is well worth the effort.
