If, however, the doctors had so abused you physically, spiritually, and emotionally as they were dispensing the medication that your body was unable to reap the benefits of the medication they were giving you, I can see how it might be very difficult for a person to trust those doctors ever again. And to doubt the very efficacy of the medication given how little effect it seems to have had on the abusing (sick) doctors giving it.

This is an imperfect analogy, but I do think it speaks to the heart of the matter: trust. When the givers of the medication are not only NOT healed by it themselves but abuse you so much while giving it to you that you cannot heal, it leads a person not to trust either in the doctors or the medications again.

Glenn's last comment about seeing the Church in the nun working with the poor leads me to believe that far from shunning the Church entirely, he is open to the possibility of learning to trust again. But learning to trust again can be a long and arduous journey.

We need to extend our love and understanding to anybody who has lost their Faith due to this horrible scandal. I believe our actions, and not our words (although it certainly does not hurt to warmly invite all these hurting people back to the Eucharist), will be what ultimately might lead such victims to be able to begin to trust the Church and the Sacraments again.

If we go right back to the start we find a few Maciels there too. Can you imagine how anyone who Judas had catechised and won for Christ must have felt? Remember Jesus sent them out to heal the sick and cast out demons Judas was one of them. The writers of the Gospels made no attempt to cover that up. In fact they deliberately exposed it - Divinely inspired. And there is a reason for that. Throughout the ages we have seen some unsavoury characters in positions of power in the Church. Remember both Martin Luther and St. Francis were disturbed by the wrongdoings of Churchmen - so take your pick - are you going to follow the example of Luther or of Francis. - Blessings - Rene
