Scott Hahn becomes Muslim!

This is shocking news, but I just confirmed it myself: my former professor, famed Catholic convert Scott Hahn, is becoming Muslim! I talked to him about it and here is what he had to say:

“As you know, the focus of my Scriptural studies has been on the covenant, especially the covenant with Abraham. Recently, I was rereading Genesis and I noticed something I had never noticed before: did you know that Abraham had a son before Isaac? It’s true: his name was Ismael, and he is actually the oldest son of Abraham. And as everyone knows, the oldest son always receives the covenant blessings in Genesis – just look at Cain, Esau, and Reuben. So I realized that Ismael must be the true son of the covenant. So then I did some more research and I found that Islam claims to be descended from Ismael. Well, it doesn’t take a Scripture Scholar like me to realize that Islam must be the way to go.”

Hahn, who will be taking the name Muhammad Abril-fuul, plans to formally join Islam today, April 1st. No word yet on what Hahn’s wife Kimberly thinks of all this, but a well-placed source tells me that she saw Mrs. Hahn shopping for burqas recently.

  6. Wow, questioning Scott Hahn’s theology? Hmmm… wait – is that an April Fool’s joke, too?!

Hey, I thought it was funny… and, well, I figured it was supposed to be obvious that it was a joke.

  7. I thought it was pretty funny. And I have one friend who ever questioned Scott’s theology, around me, anyway. She even questioned whether or not he would remain Catholic. (He’d been in the Church ten years longer than her, by the way. And she fell away a few years ago. So there. :P )

  11. Hmmm… very funny? I still have actual concerns about a certain recording he made in the early ’90s, specifically the comments he makes about “traditionalists” and his comments on the Church Doctors way of interpreting scripture being flawed (of course, as compared to his method). He may have a lot of degrees (especially in that deviscive concept of “systemic theology” vs “biblical theology”) but I cannot recommend him. Sorry, Hahn, the Doctors know best.

  12. Considering the way many Catholics have to idealize people they consider holy–or degrade them entirely after they find a flaw (my dear God, does one not listen to the messages these people say, which is that they are entirely worthless on their own!) I was deep in St. Teresa of Avila’s autobiography, where she re-iterated how glad she was that so many people were persecuting her and reviling her, because when “the crowd” thinks one holy, the next thing is the total degradation by them on finding the inevitable human weakness. Even the Vatican is loathe to admit the flaws of the Saints, which I find too bad because we ALL have them, even those who have achieved the “perfection” of Sainthood. Never mind the canonization process which brings all this to the fore. St. Teresa by today’s standards would be a “hysteric”, St. Rose of Lima an “obsessive-compulsive”, and my internist–who treats many people with “eating disorders” studied St. Catherine of Sienna’s life in depth because of the example of “eating disorder” (sic) that she had… even so, I refuse using these psychological diagnoses, having recently had a “run-in” with these people who label in this fashion, and, therefore, swearing off any connection with them whatever–as well as their labels (and I have a graduate education in clinical psychology). There are much more loving and effective ways to deal with these issues. One of them is treating people as the “whole” they are–unique and individual creations of God. Dr. Scott Hahn’s Google pages, not all that long ago were filled with Fundamentalist grief… may he be pleased to know you are treating all this in a humorous manner–humor is so essential in dealing with it.

  16. Although an interesting thought, (just to clear things up) we know that the covenant was not passed on through Ishmael. God said: “It is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name” (Gen 21:12). Also, St. Paul explains: “But he who was born of the bondswoman [i.e., Ishmael] was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman [i.e., Isaac] was by promise.” (Gal 5:23) And it is ‘the promises’ of God to Abraham that were the basis of the covenant.

Hope that clears any questions up! God bless!
